Chino’s Vegetable Shop

Posted By jane On June 26, 2009 @ 4:35 pm In | 1 Comment

Chez Panisse [1]‘s Alice Waters—a vocal stickler for fresh, top-shelf ingredients—ships Chino’s organic produce to her Berkeley landmark.

A Japanese-American family runs this popular organic produce market, which sets up shop on the edge of their fields just 10 minutes east of I-5 in the north county of San Diego. The produce is seasonal, but if you’re there at the right time, don’t leave without the bicolored corn, the heirloom tomatoes, the wide variety of salad greens (try the Japanese mizuna!), the baby Brussels sprouts, and the outstanding strawberries (French and California styles).

When you taste Chino’s goods, you realize how watered-down the flavor of supermarket produce is. This is what vegetables are supposed to taste like.
