Lined up along the water of the San Francisco Bay, like a salute to Oakland across the way, is a collection of beloved food shops and restaurants known as the Ferry Building Market. The majority of vendors utilize sustainable and seasonal ingredients, selling everything from mountain-gathered Porcini mushrooms to heritage-breed pork salami. Tourists and locals mingle in the long hallway, drawn down a corridor here and there for a freshly-shucked oyster at Hog Island Oyster Co. or a cocktail and a spring roll at the Slanted Door. A bustling farmers’ market sets up shop outside three days a week.
