Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Pacific Sun Tehama County Blend (Medium)Print This Page
Located in northern California and surrounded by four national forests, Pacific Sun Gourmet has been a family-run business since 1952. Jane Flynn and her son Brendon oversee sustainable plots growing plums, walnuts, almonds, and olives. They do their own milling and are able to produce interesting blends by combining both early- and late-harvest olives.
The Tehama County Blend–made from Ascolana and Mission olives and named after the county where the oil is produced–is the company’s flagship olive oil. Of the two medium-intensity olive oils they offer (Proprietor’s Select is the other, and has a sweet peach undertone), this is certainly more of a multi-use olive oil–a good “starter” oil to use cooking, over salads, or for bread dipping. From the flavor profile, LTBB found the artichoke and avocado flavors to be the most prominent.
Want to get a firsthand view? Every November, Pacific Sun holds its “Love at First Crush” event so people can see how olive oil is made: visitors take a hay ride to pick olives from the Mission trees and then participate in the milling process with Brendon. And lest we forget we’re in northern California, two local wineries are on-hand with wine tastings, too.
